5-Day Primate & Culture Immersion

5 Days

Day 1: Into the Highlands
Fly or drive into Bwindi. Your lodge, perched on a hillside, offers breathtaking views of terraced hills
rolling into the mist. After check-in, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring Ugandan staples—matooke,
groundnut sauce, and grilled tilapia.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking
The trek is demanding yet rewarding. After hours of climbing and descending, the forest suddenly opens
up to reveal a family of gorillas. You spend an intimate hour with them, capturing photos and whispers
of awe. That evening, you sit around a campfire, listening to your guide narrate stories of conservation
battles fought to protect these primates.
Day 3: The Batwa Trail
Guided by Batwa elders, you follow trails they once used to hunt and gather. You learn how they made
fire from sticks, which plants cured illnesses, and how they once worshipped forest spirits. A traditional
lunch follows, accompanied by flute music. Later in the afternoon, you visit the Home of Kigezi
Museum, where artifacts, crafts, and herbal exhibits showcase the region’s identity.
Day 4: Lake Mutanda and Ekizino Dance
A canoe glides you across the glassy waters of Lake Mutanda. Children paddle by in dugout canoes,
while the Virunga peaks stand tall on the horizon. At Kyahugye Island, you encounter a mini zoo with
zebras and antelopes. Evening brings the fiery rhythm of the Ekizino dance—Bakiga men stomping in
unison, women singing, and drums reverberating through the hills. You are invited to join, and laughter
blends cultures together.
Day 5: Farewell
On the return journey, you stop at the Kabale Regional Museum to appreciate ethnography and Kigezi’s
history. By the time you board your return flight, you feel you’ve not just visited Uganda—you’ve lived
it.
